Methods for Assessing Children's Syntax

Methods for Assessing Children's Syntax
By:Dana McDaniel,Helen Smith Cairns,Cecile McKee
Published on 1998 by MIT Press

This book is designed in part as a handbook to assist students and researchers in the choice and use of methods for investigating children's grammar. The study of child language and, in particular, child syntax is a growing area of linguistic research, yet methodological issues often take a back seat to the findings and conclusions of specific studies in the field. This book is designed in part as a handbook to assist students and researchers in the choice and use of methods for investigating children's grammar. For example, a method (or combination of methods) can be chosen based on what is measured and who the target subject is. In addition to the selection of methods, there are also pointers for designing and conducting experimental studies and for evaluating research. Methods for Assessing Children's Syntax combines the best features of approaches developed in experimental psychology and linguistics that ground the study of language within the study of human cognition. The first three parts focus on specific methods, divided according to the type of data collected: production, comprehension, and judgment. Chapters in the fourth part take up general methodological considerations that arise regardless of which method is used. All of the methods described can be modified to meet the requirements of a specific study. Contributors Helen Smith Cairns, Katherine Demuth, Jill de Villiers, Suzanne Flynn, Claire Foley, LouAnn Gerken, Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Helen Goodluck, Peter Gordon, Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Jennifer Ryan Hsu, Louis Michael Hsu, Celia Jakubowicz, Laurence B. Children's Literature as Communication

Children's Literature as Communication
By:Roger D. Sell
Published on 2002-01-01 by John Benjamins Publishing

In this book, members of the ChiLPA Project explore the children's literature of several different cultures, ranging from ancient India, nineteenth century Russia, and the Soviet Union, to twentieth century Britain, America, Australia, Sweden, and Finland. The research covers not only the form and content of books for children, but also their potential social functions, especially within education. These two perspectives are brought together within a theory of children's literature as one among other forms of communication, an approach that sees the role of literary scholars, critics and teachers as one of mediation. Part I deals with the way children's writers and picturebook-makers draw on a culture's available resources of orality, literacy, intertextuality, and image. Part II examines their negotiation of major issues such as the child adult distinction, gender, politics, and the Holocaust. Part III discusses children's books as used within language education programmes, with particular attention to young readers' pragmatic processing of differences between the context of writing and their own context of reading.

Just the Facts

Just the Facts
By:Lisa L Owens
Published on 2020-05-25 by Editorial Freelancers Association Publications

Writing nonfiction for children takes skill with research as well as with writing. The facts and the research supporting children's nonfiction must hold up under intense scrutiny. Sometimes called |kidlit,| today's successful children's nonfiction is engaging and enticing and supported by the most credible source material available. Today's successful children's nonfiction authors must believe that facts matter, embrace the crucial role that research plays, know the difference between cursory and quality research, model good research practices for young readers, tap into the joy of chasing new knowledge and in sharing it with others, and bring all of these things to bear on each new book. Just the Facts: On Researching Your Nonfiction Children's Book walks a writer-researcher through the steps from pre-planning a subject, to determining the format, to establishing the scope, to embarking on the research-writing-research-writing cycle. The booklet contains a sample project plan, outlining in great detail the process the author uses once committed to a new nonfiction children's book idea, from brainstorming, to note-taking, organizing your workspace, sketching out the plan, identifying and collecting source material, creating a writing schedule, stepping away, revising, and when to call it done. Owens recommends tools such as Google Bookmarks, Twitter bookmarks, private YouTube playlists, and Scrivener's research-collection feature to capture online sources for review. Topics include: How to find valuable sources and get access to them. How to select and validate secondary sources. Best practice for testing facts, including the rule-of-three, a rule adhered to by most publishers. Helpful lists of sources, mentor texts, and other resources included.

Reading Poverty in America

Reading Poverty in America
By:Patrick Shannon
Published on 2014-03-14 by Routledge

In this book Shannon’s major premise remains the same as his 1998 Reading Poverty: Poverty has everything to do with American public schooling–how it is theorized, how it is organized, and how it runs. Competing ideological representations of poverty underlie school assumptions about intelligence, character, textbook content, lesson formats, national standards, standardized achievement tests, and business/school partnerships and frame our considerations of each. In this new edition, Shannon provides an update of the ideological struggles to name and respond to poverty through the design, content, and pedagogy of reading education, showing how, through their representations and framing, advocates of liberal, conservative, and neoliberal interpretations attempt the ideological practice of teaching the public who they are, what they should know, and what they should value about equality, civic society, and reading. For those who decline these offers, Shannon presents radical democratic interpretations of the relationship between poverty and reading education that position the poor, the public, students, and teachers as agents in redistribution of economic, cultural, and political capital in the United States.

Creating Characters

Creating Characters
By:Dwight V. Swain
Published on 2012-11-28 by University of Oklahoma Press

A jargon-free manual on the basics of developing interesting fictional characters Vibrant, believable characters help drive a fictional story. Along with a clever plot, well-drawn characters make us want to continue reading a novel or finish watching a movie. In Creating Characters, Dwight V. Swain shows how writers can invent interesting characters and improve them so that they move a story along. “The core of character,” he says in chapter 1, “lies in each individual story person’s ability to care about something; to feel implicitly or explicitly, that something is important.” Building on that foundation—the capacity to care—Swain takes the would-be writer step-by-step through the fundamentals of finding and developing “characters who turn you on.” This basic but thought-provoking how-to is a valuable tool for both the novice and the seasoned writer.

Children’s Drawings

Children’s Drawings
By:Martin Krampen
Published on 1991 by Springer Science & Business Media

This book is dedicated to all those who love children and their wonderful, often surprising, drawings. This means it addresses all those interested in their devel oping capacity to produce |iconic| signs: parents, teachers, child psychologists, artists, architects (since building drawings are treated here), and semioticians at large-to name but a few potential readers. Because of the broad audience, I tried to keep scientific jargon to a minimum. Whenever this was unavoidable, I tried to explain the terms in such a way that even beginners in psychology could understand my arguments. I received the first impulse to think about a book like this from the Interna tional Year of the Child declared by the UN in 1979. In a first phase of the project, I obtained drawings of the six different building types treated in this book from more than 100 children aged 3-12 years in Turkey during a stay there as part of the faculty of Architecture of the Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon under the auspices of the UN ESCO/UNDP program TUR/75/012. My special thanks go to Dr. Erdem Aksoy, then president of the university, and Dr. Ozgontil Aksoy, then dean of the faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, for their encouragement to carry out the project. I would also like to thank Dr. Kutzal Oztlirk, Sevinc Erttirk, Ali Ozbilen, Hasan Saltik, together with all the teachers in nursery and elementary schools in and around Trabzon who helped to collect the drawings.

Handbook of Children’s Literacy

Handbook of Children’s Literacy
By:Terezinha Nunes,Peter Bryant
Published on 2003-12-31 by Springer Science & Business Media

PETER BRYANT & TEREZINHA NUNES The time that it takes children to learn to read varies greatly between different orthographies, as the chapter by Sprenger-Charolles clearly shows, and so do the difficulties that they encounter in learning about their own orthography. Nevertheless most people, who have the chance to learn to read, do in the end read well enough, even though a large number experience some significant difficulties on the way. Most of them eventually become reasonably efficient spellers too, even though they go on make spelling mistakes (at any rate if they are English speakers) for the rest of their lives. So, the majority of humans plainly does have intellectual resources that are needed for reading and writing, but it does not always find these resources easy to marshal. What are these resources? Do any of them have to be acquired? Do different orthographies make quite different demands on the intellect? Do people differ significantly from each other in the strength and accessibility of these resources? If they do, are these differences an important factor in determining children's success in learning to read and write? These are the main questions that the different chapters in this section on Basic Processes set out to answer.
