Body of Art

Body of Art
By:Phaidon Editors
Published on 2015-10-12 by Phaidon Press

The first book to celebrate the beautiful and provocative ways artists have represented, scrutinized and utilized the body over centuries. Body of Art is the first book to explore the various ways the human body has been both an inspiration and a medium for artists over hundreds of thousands of years. Unprecedented in its scope, it examines the many different manifestations of the body in art, from Anthony Gormley and Maya Lin sculptures to eight-armed Hindu gods and ancient Greek reliefs, from feminist graphics and Warhol's empty electric chair to the blue-tinted complexion of Singer Sargent's Madame X. It is the most expansive examination of the human body in art, spanning western and non-western, ancient to contemporary, representative to abstract and conceptual. Over 400 artists are featured in chapters that explore identity, beauty, religion, absent body, sex and gender, power, body's limits, abject body and bodies & space. Works range from 11,000 BC hand stencils in Argentine caves to videos and performances by contemporary artists such as Marina Abramovic, Joan Jonas and Bruce Naumanâ?¿ Its fresh, accessible and dynamic voice brings to life the thrilling diversity of both classical and contemporary art through the prism of the body. More than simply a book of representations, this is an original and thought provoking look at the human body across time, cultures and media.

Carl Rungius

Carl Rungius
By:Carl Rungius,Karen Wonders,Glenbow Museum
Published on 2001 by Warwick Pub

During his lifetime, artist Carl Rungius (1869-1959) enjoyed a reputation similar to that of well-known Western painter and sculptor Frederic Remington. Though interest in his depictions of the wildlife and awesome landscapes of the West declined following his death, growing fascination with our wilderness heritage is bringing Rungius back into the public eye. Carl Rungius was the first career wildlife artist on this continent. Born in Germany, a visit to Wyoming in 1895 fired Rungius's imagination and inspired him to immigrate to the U.S. the following year. He would spend the rest of his life studying and depicting North America's wide-open spaces and the creatures that inhabit them. Rungius's paintings present majestic moose, elk, big-horn sheep, and mountain goats in idyllic landscapes seemingly untouched by humans. Rungius created the images that often come to mind when we think of |wilderness|. Rungius tended toward realism in his depictions of wildlife -- he did some commercial illustration work for magazines like Field and Stream, and paintings for the New York Zoological Society -- but he also experimented with contemporary developments in brushwork. Though his training was European, Rungius worked to find a palette that would better convey the striking contracts of colour and light peculiar to the mountains and prairies of North America. Rungius's time spent in the west distanced him from the New York art scene that might have developed his critical reputation, but it earned him a loyal following among collectors in both Canada and the United States. Many well-known wildlife artists acknowledge his influence, and critics are re-appraising his work. The publication ofthis book coincides with a travelling exhibit organized by the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta, that is sure to increase interest in Rungius among the general public.

Graffiti Art Styles

Graffiti Art Styles
By:Lisa Gottlieb
Published on 2014-01-10 by McFarland

This book presents a classification system for graffiti art styles that reflects the expertise of graffiti writers and the work of art historian Erwin Panofsky. Based on Panofsky’s theories of iconographical analysis, the classification model is designed to identify the style of a graffiti art piece through its visual characteristics. Tested by image cataloguers in archives, libraries, and museums, the system assists information professionals in identifying the iconic styles of graffiti art pieces. It also demonstrates the power of Panofsky’s theories to provide access to non-representational or abstract art images. The result is a new paradigm for Panofsky’s theories that challenges the assumptions of traditional models. This innovative book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about graffiti art and for information professionals concerned with both the practical and intellectual issues surrounding image access.

Pop Art

Pop Art
By:Tilman Osterwold
Published on 2003 by Taschen

||Everything is beautiful,|| raved Andy Warhol, in raptures at the glamour of modern life, consumer society, the world of the media and its stars. And in so saying, he was expressing the feelings of a generation who felt their age was dawning, an age of ||love|| and ||freedom.|| In art, too, a new attitude towards the present was making itself felt. Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, Richard Hamilton and many other artists were discovering Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Coca Cola, comics, advertising, household appliances and food cans as an independent aesthetic reality. Popularity and triviality were no longer terms of abuse, but were central to a new understanding of an art whose aim was to break down the barriers between art and life. The author gives us a detailed account of the styles, themes and sources of Pop Art, investigating its development in different countries and providing biographies of its leading exponents.

Primitivism and Twentieth-Century Art

Primitivism and Twentieth-Century Art
By:Jack Flam,Carl Einstein,Miriam Deutch
Published on 2003-03-27 by Univ of California Press

|This is a much needed, important collection-a goldmine of sources for scholars and students. The texts articulate the key Primitivist aesthetic discourses of the period, offering crucial insight into the complex and always changing nexus between culture, politics, and representation. Because of the breadth of the materials covered and the controversies they raise, this anthology is one of the all too rare volumes that not only will provide reference materials for years to come but also will feature centrally in classroom discussions.|—Suzanne Preston Blier, author of African Vodun: Art, Psychology, and Power |For almost a century art historians have fretted about the notion of primitivism in the arts. This comprehensive-in both senses of the word-anthology is a peerless source of the history of responses to works categorized as 'primitive.' In its range, the book touches upon all the troubling questions-formal, anthropological, political, historical-that have bedeviled the study of the arts of Oceania, Africa, and North and South America, and provides the grounds, at last, for intelligent pursuit of keener distinctions. I regard this book as a superb contribution to the study of Modern art; in fact, indispensable.|—Dore Ashton, author of Noguchi East and West |An extraordinarily useful and complete collection of primary documents, many translated for the first time into English, and almost all unlikely to be encountered elsewhere without serious effort. Its five sections, each with a lively and scholarly introduction, reveal the diverse views of artists and writers on primitive art from Matisse, Picasso, and Fry to many far less known and sometimes surprising figures. The book also uncovers the politics and aesthetics of the major museum exhibitions that gained acceptance for art that had been both reviled and mythologized. Recent texts included are all germane. This book will be invaluable for any college course on the topic.|—Shelly Errington, author of The Death of Authentic Primitive Art and Other Tales of Progress |An exceptionally valuable anthology of seventy documents--most heretofore unavailable in English--on the ongoing controversies surrounding Primitivism and Modern art. Insightfully chosen and annotated, the collection is brilliantly introduced by Jack Flam's essay on the historical progression, contexts, and cultural complexities of more than one hundred years' ideas about Primitivism. Rich, timely, illuminating.|—Herbert M. Cole, author of Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa

Van Gogh's Ear

Van Gogh's Ear
By:Bernadette Murphy
Published on 2016-07-12 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux

The best-known and most sensational event in Vincent van Gogh’s life is also the least understood. For more than a century, biographers and historians seeking definitive facts about what happened on a December night in Arles have unearthed more questions than answers. Why would an artist at the height of his powers commit such a brutal act? Who was the mysterious “Rachel” to whom he presented his macabre gift? Did he use a razor or a knife? Was it just a segment—or did Van Gogh really lop off his entire ear? In Van Gogh’s Ear, Bernadette Murphy reveals, for the first time, the true story of this long-misunderstood incident, sweeping away decades of myth and giving us a glimpse of a troubled but brilliant artist at his breaking point. Murphy’s detective work takes her from Europe to the United States and back, from the holdings of major museums to the moldering contents of forgotten archives. She braids together her own thrilling journey of discovery with a narrative of Van Gogh’s life in Arles, the sleepy Provençal town where he created his finest work, and vividly reconstructs the world in which he moved—the madams and prostitutes, café patrons and police inspectors, shepherds and bohemian artists. We encounter Van Gogh’s brother and benefactor Theo, his guest and fellow painter Paul Gauguin, and many local subjects of Van Gogh’s paintings, some of whom Murphy identifies for the first time. Strikingly, Murphy uncovers previously unknown information about “Rachel”—and uses it to propose a bold new hypothesis about what was occurring in Van Gogh’s heart and mind as he made a mysterious delivery to her doorstep. As it reopens one of art history’s most famous cold cases, Van Gogh’s Ear becomes a fascinating work of detection. It is also a study of a painter creating his most iconic and revolutionary work, pushing himself ever closer to greatness even as he edged toward madness—and one fateful sweep of the blade that would resonate through the ages.

Boom

Boom
By:Michael Shnayerson
Published on 2019-05-21 by Hachette UK

The meteoric rise of the largest unregulated financial market in the world-for contemporary art-is driven by a few passionate, guileful, and very hard-nosed dealers. They can make and break careers and fortunes. The contemporary art market is an international juggernaut, throwing off multimillion-dollar deals as wealthy buyers move from fair to fair, auction to auction, party to glittering party. But none of it would happen without the dealers-the tastemakers who back emerging artists and steer them to success, often to see them picked off by a rival. Dealers operate within a private world of handshake agreements, negotiating for the highest commissions. Michael Shnayerson, a longtime contributing editor to Vanity Fair, writes the first ever definitive history of their activities. He has spoken to all of today's so-called mega dealers-Larry Gagosian, David Zwirner, Arne and Marc Glimcher, and Iwan Wirth-along with dozens of other dealers-from Irving Blum to Gavin Brown-who worked with the greatest artists of their times: Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, and more. This kaleidoscopic history begins in the mid-1940s in genteel poverty with a scattering of galleries in midtown Manhattan, takes us through the ramshackle 1950s studios of Coenties Slip, the hipster locations in SoHo and Chelsea, London's Bond Street, and across the terraces of Art Basel until today. Now, dealers and auctioneers are seeking the first billion-dollar painting. It hasn't happened yet, but they are confident they can push the price there soon.

The Life of Raphael

The Life of Raphael
By:Giorgio Vasari
Published on 2018-04-03 by Getty Publications

Giorgio Vasari, Florentine painter and architect, friend of Michelangelo and intimate of the Medici, is best known for his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects, published in 1550 and in an enlarged edition in 1568. With more than two hundred biographies, it has for centuries been recognized as a seminal text in art history and one of the most important sources on the Italian Renaissance. It is to Vasari that we owe much of our knowledge of Raphael (1483–1520), who in his day was considered perhaps the greatest painter of all time. Rich in colorful anecdotes, The Life of Raphael is important for its sustained attention to the range of Raphael’s art, whose chronology and development Vasari describes in detail, together with the painter’s ample love life and spectacular social career. It also pays attention, unprecedented for its time, to theoretical issues. This edition, introduced by the scholar Jill Burke, includes thirty pages of color illustrations covering the entire span of Raphael’s oeuvre.
